Underground applications of muon Imaging with SpinLab

06.11.2025

Every structure begins with its foundation -one of the most critical elements determining its stability and longevity.
A well-defined and properly understood foundation ensures that the entire structure remains secure.

Deciding on the right foundation requires a deep understanding of the underground. Yet, the subsurface remains largely invisible.
Traditional methods,  such as boreholes, seismic scans, or resistivity measurements, provide valuable information but often fail to capture the full picture.
This limitation represents a key challenge for engineers and construction professionals worldwide.

During our work in Germany, we engaged with numerous construction companies and engineers to explore this issue in depth.
Science offers a new perspective through muon imaging -a non-invasive technology that uses naturally occurring cosmic-ray particles (muons) to map what lies beneath the surface.
Sometimes described as a “safe X-ray” for the ground, muon imaging enables a more complete and accurate understanding of subsurface structures.

By applying this technology, Muotech aims to support safer, more resilient construction practices and contribute to the development of stable and sustainable cities.
