Muons uncover the secrets of Wawel Castle

12.07.2026

Some projects are exciting because of the technology.
Others are exciting because of the place.

Today, we officially kicked off a new muon imaging campaign at Wawel Royal Castle in Kraków, where we’ll be exploring the underground structures surrounding the legendary Smocza Jama (Dragon’s Den). All that using space (cosmic-ray muons).

For centuries, these underground spaces have been part of the history and mythology of Poland. Now, we’re bringing SpaceTech into one of the country’s most iconic heritage sites to see what non-invasive imaging can reveal.

The next few months will be dedicated to installation, data collection, and analysis.
For now, the planning begins. Soon, the measurements will follow – and we can’t wait to share what we discover!

A huge thank to everyone involved in making this collaboration possible!
