Muon scanning to safeguard underwater heritage and infrastructure

19.09.2025

Muon scanning, a technology rooted in fundamental physics, is now being explored for applications in underwater environments.

Together with the Greek BCT Excellence Hub, and under the leadership of Kate Katrankova, who coordinates partner agreements, oversees planning, and manages project execution, Muotech is testing how this method can support the protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage. This work is closely connected to MentorCult, which focuses on research, conservation, and accessibility of underwater cultural sites.

Beyond conservation, Muotech is actively advancing high-impact applications in underwater constructions and critical oil and gas infrastructure.

Our aim is not experimentation for its own sake. It is to understand whether muon-based scanning can provide unique, reliable, and meaningful contributions where existing methods fall short.
