Safeguarding Heritage: Combining EO Technologies and Muon Tomography

18.10.2024

The EO for Cultural and Natural Heritage Workshop, held on 15-16 October 2024 at ESA’s ESRIN facility in Frascati, Italy, convened experts to explore the integration of Earth Observation (EO) technologies in heritage preservation. The event highlighted advancements in satellite imagery, drones, and data processing, emphasizing their roles in monitoring and protecting cultural and natural heritage sites from threats such as climate change, natural disasters, and human activities.

Our presentation, titled “Enhancing Subsurface Analysis of Heritage Sites with Synergy of Muon Tomography and Remote Sensing,” introduced an innovative approach that combines muon tomography with EO data. This method enables detailed subsurface imaging of heritage sites, providing insights into structural integrity and uncovering hidden features without invasive procedures. By integrating muon tomography with remote sensing, we aim to offer a comprehensive tool for heritage conservation, allowing for precise analysis and informed decision-making in preservation efforts.

The workshop underscored the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in heritage preservation. By merging advanced EO technologies with novel subsurface imaging techniques like muon tomography, we can develop robust strategies to safeguard our cultural and natural heritage against evolving challenges.
